When comes to the type of Tibetan Mastiff, I’m personally feeling this perhaps the most difficult subject to tackle and also a true interesting topic to discuss  especially when it comes to the show ring. Its differences in size, color, variations within the type are rich enough to make a newcomer of this breed mistakenly think this is a fierce group competition instead of a breed show and this is also likely to be a forever headache even for our respected veteran judges.  As a breeder from the motherland of Tibetan Mastiff and I am going to share its types based on its different origins. After extensive researches and visits, I summarize that Tibetan Mastiff are mainly coming from three different places of QingHai Tibetan Plateau.

Shan Nan Tibetan Masitff: tall with great substance, smooth hair, no mane, head open, very stable in character.

He Qu Tibetan Mastiff: small size, light bone, bark sharp, flexible, tan is very light or it is called silver

Yu Shu Tibetan Mastiff: The most popular type nowadays. It has similar characteristic like ones in Shan Nan, they are large with heavy bone, while it has extensive thick coat, beautiful mane, heavy head with a broad deep short muzzle with nice coarse out coat and thick inner coat.
